I think Alvarez/Yari has opened the flloodgates on their 2004 models. I played a brand new Koa model and was mesmerized by tone. The medrange just jumped out at me, the bass distinctive and very woody. Only $1145.

I also agree on the "play before you buy"advise. I've been playing a Taylor 810 at Galaxy USA in Atlanta. The bass almost buzzes and the the three treble strings snap. Just not set up very well for my playing at all. I once had a cheapo Alvarez that buzzed on the high e-string. I tried everything...filing the nut, iling the 5th fret, raising the bridge. Damn thing just buzzed away. I hate buzz even more than bad action!

Dear Lars,
.......
Your Friend,
Todd

P.S. That was a good post. You have recently spent some dough on musical equipment!

If I were buying a solid body, I would consider buying on E-Bay.  I've bought many items there and have been satisfied.  Also, I've played D-28's that don't live up to the reputation of their trademark.  So, I'm with Ted on this one.  When it comes to an acoustic, you should play it before you buy.

Basically, I'm not interested in looks or type of wood.  I look for a guitar that tunes up, frets out, plays well, and sounds like a million dollars.  My two-cents..... For what it's worth.

Have any of you ever bought anything off e-bay? Would you even consider plunking down as much as $800, $900 for a guitar, say a Taylor 410 without playing it first? I'm considering just such a move. Thoughts?

PS My favorite extreme Florantine model is a Lonestar, Dallas model, with some of the most garish MOP inlay I've ever seen. Stars and triangles and stuff up and down the fretboard and around the soundhole. On top of that the sound is dull and thin. It can be yours for only $520!

PS2 Here's another question: What do you think about maple as a tone wood? How would you characterize the sound? Warm? Mellow? Brassy? There are some beautiful maple instruments out there... flamed, bird eyed and quilted.

Dear Dick,
I have always enjoyed your music. You do great things with the guitar. I have a question. Who is "Ted Reece"?
Hi guys, though I'd check in with you. Ted, I've played the 714CE with the red cedar top a few times since you bought yours and am pleased to congratulate you on an excellent choice. Did you indeed play it when you opened for KK?
You can visit my Guitar Talk for incessant ramblings about my quest for the perfect instrument and lack of funds. Hey, I know, I'll set up a Pay Pal account and you guys can contribute?! Right!!! Anyway, I absolutely enjoy this conversation. Thanks for letting me in the door.
Tom
